Ukraine's Energy Storage Market: From Concept to Practical Implementation
On 27 April, Kyiv hosted the inaugural Energy Storage Day 2026 conference, organised by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association. The event served as a key platform for discussing the new architecture of Ukraine's energy system and the strategic role of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
LCF Law Group was a partner of the event, supporting the development of innovative energy solutions in Ukraine. Ivan Bondarchuk, Partner and Head of the Energy and Projects practice, moderated one of the central sessions of the conference — 'From Deals to Efficient Assets: Practical Cases from the First BESS Projects.'
Key Discussion Points
The panel discussion, featuring developers, investors, and technology leaders in the sector, focused on the practical aspects of implementing energy storage systems.
The main topics covered were:
- Development models and revenue streams: comparing the efficiency of stand-alone solutions and hybrid models (RES + BESS).
- Project bankability: the criteria by which financial institutions assess investment attractiveness and risks in the energy storage sector.
- Market integration: regulatory mechanisms for BESS participation in the ancillary services market and the balancing market. Risk management: the impact of debts in the electricity market on the pace of sector scaling.
The New Reality of the Energy Market
The main conclusion of the conference was the acknowledgement of a fact: Ukraine's energy storage market has officially moved from the expectation phase to the phase of actual construction and operation. Whereas in previous years the discussion centred on the feasibility of the technology, today the focus has shifted to finding the most efficient and scalable business models.
'A favourable momentum for investment in the storage segment in Ukraine has now formed. Companies entering the sector now have the opportunity to secure strong positions at an early stage of market development and lay the groundwork for further scaling,' said Ivan Bondarchuk.
LCF Law Group continues to actively support projects in the field of renewable energy and energy storage systems, providing reliable legal support at every stage — from deal structuring to asset commissioning.
